[Pre-Install] Kubuntu installation fails when choosing "Install alongside"

Alright. So it's rather straight forward then! Thank you for the help, SkyFishGoo, Greenster and claydog 🙂

I guess my error was to expect that any partition option, that the Kubuntu installer would select by default, was a correct choice.
However, it may be that the "shrink partition" option for the Kubuntu installer is for non-Windows OS'es 🤔
And no, BitLocker was not involved

Either way, just shrinking the partition inside Windows is easy and (per my "what I tried"-list ) done already. Also, I could easily still boot into Windows, no actual changes had been made, so the installer did indeed save me from myself 🙂
... And now it installed successfully!

The TL; DR: The solution was to install using the option "replace partition" and install Kubuntu to the unallocated space.

In Windows, you can use Disk Management to enlarge or reduce the size of the Windows partition.

Arrow 1 shows the Windows Partition

Arrow 2 shows the Kubuntu partition

Right-click on the Windows partition and then click on Shrink Volume.

if you can still boot to windows, then the installer was saving you from yourself.

look up how to shrink your windows volume, there are many guides on the subject ... this is done from INSIDE windows.

it's not a good idea to try and manipulate windows partitions from linux, or even mess with system files... which is why i don't even mount my windows partition.

if you want access to your windows data from linux, you should also look up how to move your windows data to the Drive ... this will keep all your stuff on a separate partition from the windows OS (Crive) and again it is all done from INSIDE windows.

once you have created enough unallocated space on the disk, then you are ready to point the linux installer at that blank area and install linux.

I've had this issue for a while, but I wanted to make sure I really tried to do my research before I asked here, so I read up on all the articles newbies should read from this forum

While installing Kubuntu 25.10, I ran into an error when attempting to shrink the partition for Windows. It was the first option, so I assumed it was the one I should use as a default when dual booting.

The issue is this:

Installation Failed
The installer failed to resize partition /dev/nvme0n1p3 on disk 'CT4000T705SSD5'
Details:

Shrink partition "/dev/nvmeon1p3" from 3,10 TiB to 1,55 TiB

Job: Check file system on partition "/dev/nvme0n1p3

Command: ntfsresize -no-progress-bar -- info -- force -verbose /dev/nvme0n1p3

Checking partition "/dev/nvme0n1p3" before resize/move failed

After that it boots into a live / try Kubuntu environment

What I have tried

1. Shrinking the partition in Windows first.
2. Undoing the shrinking in Windows and try again
3. Search for similar issues on this forum
4. Tried again after a two weeks break, to make sure I was not missing anything
5. Tried installing with standard language (American English)
6. Checking the Checksum of the .iso file I created with the USB tool, Rufus

I was able to give the info you ask for, because even if Kubunto fails to install, it (seems to) run(s) a Try-edition, which is such a nice feature !
