Hi, after many years with Ubuntu and Linux Mint, I have now decided to try out KDE-based distros. Specifically: Feren OS and KDE neon. Feren OS was initially based on Linux Mint, but now runs on Ubuntu with KDE Plasma 5.27. I am delighted to have found this forum where I can get support if needed (and eventually offer support myself). Thank you in advance for your support.

The thing is, the specialized forums are even smaller than this one. I asked in the Linux Mint forum which KDE forum is the largest, and they told me this one. Apart from that, there's even a KDE neon sub-section here.Originally posted by skyfishgoo View Postwelcome, we are glad to have you.
just so you know tho, this forum is about kubuntu and while there may be plenty of similarities with the distros you mention, they each have their own forums where you are likely to get more specific help when you need it.

I first came across Feren OS when I was looking for the most attractive distros. And I immediately liked Feren OS much more than Linux Mint, which I had been using for many years. Feren OS was initially based on Mint, but now it is based on KDE, although it continues to be based on Ubuntu. I immediately liked the fact that it included the Nemo file manager.
Then I also installed KDE neon, which certainly can't be accused of being too old. After a steep learning curve with KDE, I now even use KDE neon as my default. When it comes to the beauty of distros, a lot of it is simply a matter of preference. Looking back, I could probably configure Linux Mint to look very similar to the two KDE distros. At least visually. I run KDE neon with the default Wayland, which has worked well so far, except for a few problems for which I found solutions here. Wayland seems to be the future, but I haven't yet been able to figure out what the advantage is in my area of application. Where can I read more about this?

It isn't so much advantages of one or the other, but that the decades-ancient X11 is being replaced, with actual true development of X11 having stopped for the most part some time ago.Originally posted by Dan-cer View PostI haven't yet been able to figure out what the advantage is in my area of application. There is no one place to go to for information, to be honest, unless you are a developer-type and can understand this sort of thing, and the code.
Just do a simple search for "wayland vs X11" and you will get the ideas fairly quickly. But don't go too far down the rabbit hole in the comments

Basically, what it boils down to is that unlike a corporate structure, the open aspects here mean *everyone* (KDE, Gnome, and all the other stakeholders) have a say, and there are disagreements, and even useless bickering, and a lot of hot air everywhere.

Thank you, probably I will do. Now I'm still in the exploring phase of different KDE distros. Just installed as 3rd distro Debian 13, also with KDE plasma 6.3.6.
Feren OS I likely replace with Kubuntu... but not yet.

If you looking for stability, i'll say Kuuntu LTS is a good way. Installed for Gaming and multimedia for my daughters and wife at home on a desktop with Intel cpu / Nvidia GPU since months. Discover is quite easy even for kids to handle. I am mostly a Gnome user, but Plasma handle better scaling which is important for our needs with this computer.
Snap and even Flatpak, gives you access to newest versions of software if needed, and Discover manage this different sources quite well.
Regards
