I am being told that an upgrade is available, but when clicking the icon, I am told the upgrade failed with an output that shows nothing in the resultant window. If I run
    Code:
    do-release-upgrade
    Code:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
Please install all available updates for your release before upgrading.

I should point out that all updates that can be installed are installed.

I would really appreciate any help offered, many thanks.

Double-check that you really do have all updates installed, particularly any 'phased' updates, or anything being held. There shouldn't be any phased updates, on an End of Life release, but still worth checking:

    Code:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt full-upgrade
Look for messaging about held of phased packages.

Now, do you have any PPAs in use? These can block upgrades and cause this sort of problem, especially driver or other system, level addition. In aprticular, anything that provides packages that are *newer* than what is in 25.04.

    EDIT;
Nope, Oracular's repo archive has not moved to old-releases.ubuntu.com just yet. But 24.10 IS EOL.
Ignore the content below, for the time being.

You *should* see warnings/errors running apt-update as 24.10's archive has been mothballed, since it became EOL ~three weeks ago. There are no files there, though it looks like the basic directory structure and release informational files may still be there.

Now it is possible to try the upgrade, which will most likely take some editing of a file.

We will use the EOL Upgrades docs as a template. The content is old, but the process has not changed, though the file used has.

    Open the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources.

    Edit the line that has:

    Code:
    URIs: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
    and change it to:

    Code:
    URIs: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
Save the file, and check for updates again.

Now, try the upgrade process once more. Just having an archive for 24.10 present and enabled on your system should be enough to allow the upgrade to proceed.

This is a stray 24.04 package with the t64 fixes, later releases don't have the t64 suffix

Most of these are Plasma5 and plasma 6 variants of the same package, but are both usually installed -- there are still some Plasma 5 applications around that need this sort of thing.
The other ones are meta-packages that just define a set of dependencies, and in themselves have no other functions.

I have no idea if this means these packages in the brackets get removed or not. I suspect not, but libcanberra0t64 IS safe to remove, in theory, as this Noble package is being replaced with the correct package name libcanberra0 for 24.10. Now, this 24.10 package should have caused the 24.04 one to be uninstalled, but this obviously did not happen.

I think myself that doing this without simulation will be fine, as it does fix the dependencies, as long as nothing else is actually removed.

Thanks Claydoh, I will do the update without simulation and report back the results. I will also try to then run the release upgrade again.
