    Amdgpu-dkas Issue

I recently downloaded kubuntu on my first PC build. After installing the OS, my GPU has not been working properly. It is a 9060. When I try to update using Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, I am hit with this message. Any ideas on where to go next?

    Errors were encountered while processing:

    amdgpu-dkms

    E: Sub-process /us/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

    Welcome to KFN.

You will need to provide us with more complete information. "PC build". What did you build? What CPU and GPU (or graphics card)? Motherboard?

let me know if any further information is needed. I am obviously new, and don’t know what I don’t know. Thanks in advance.

Should have included in my question: What version of Kubuntu did you install?

25.04 I believe. I am not at the computer at the moment, but I’m 99% sure that’s correct.

amdgpu-dkms is no longer a package that is supported by Ubuntu (Kubuntu is Ubuntu but with the KDE/Plasma Desktop Environment). It isn't part of the packaging for Kubuntu 25.04. Did you download it? If yes, from what site?

The proprietary AMDGPU video driver as downloaded from AMD is NOT useful for desktop PCs. They only really support LTS releases. Which likely explains the dkms failure when it attempts to build a kernel module in 25.04. And AMD are actually moving away from the closed driver in their next Linux software release, and using Mesa directly.

Uninstall AMDGPU -- refer to the documentation you used to install it.

For such a dripping wet GPU (released in June?) you want to install the current mesa 3D drivers and possibly a more current firmware

You may also need a more current kernel as well, though 6.14 is likely fine. Luckily, trying out other kernels is not hard and is safe, since you will not lose your existing kernel when installing a different one. "Mainline" kernels may be hit-or-miss, since these are generic builds and might not have all the appropriate bells and whistles turned on. Xanmod IMO is a good choice, though Mainline you can use a GUI tool to pick and choose kernels to install.

And even then, you might still need to investigate what other Linux users with this card have found for tweaks, though most of them are likely using an Arch-based distro, and maybe Fedora, which will have newer Mesa and kernels already. But boot parameters or other tweaks might be found.

Me, for this card I'd go for the Mesa PPA to start, then firmware, and trying a newer kernel last.

I am not sure. I tried to download the amdgpu drivers before I learned that it’s not needed. Is there a way to delete it, or will I need to reinstall?

Great I will delete the GPU drivers the next chance I get. Thank you for the help!

I read that 6.14 kernel is needed, so I updated to a newer version. I downloaded firmware that I found is necessary for the GPU to work, and made sure mesa is up to date, and it is still not recognizing the GPU. The graphics are set to llapipes, or something like that, once again not at the computer. What would next steps be in trouble shooting?
