external hdd not mounting unless i do it through terminal

    Operating system: Kubuntu 25.04

Here is what shows up in my Dolphin when i plug in the HDD: An error occurred while accessing 'Elements', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/kwon/Elements: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error

i've already tried sudo ntfsfix but that doesn't do anything

currently the only way to mount the hdd is to do sudo mount in the terminal

this issue doesn't happen with any of my other usb devices as far as i know

an ntfs drive with errors... shocking.

if you have windows still available to you then it's as easy as booting to windows and letting it do the repair mumbojumbo.

if not you can make a bootable USB with an .iso of Hirens.BootCD on it (or throw it onto a ventoy drive) and you can furn chkdsk from there to fix it.

i have no confidence in the linux tools for this as i think MS keeps inventing new ways to mess up an ntfs file system.

I used my old windows NTFS drive for about a year, after installing Kubuntu. Every now and again I would have to use NTFSFIX due to that error message then it would mount and I could use the files on the drive again. Then it got to where it was having the error more frequent, I would have to use NTFSFIX every time. So I shrunk and reformatted part of that same drive to a file system Linux Ubuntu works well with EXT4, using GParted. I struggled with the file transfer to the new drive, It would move only part of files at a time to the new drive, some would make it some wouldn't. Each time it would fail, I would have to use NTFSFIX again, then move some more files, I kept doing it until I got tired. So I ended up saving to the new EXT4 drive about half the files and it uses them with no problem, faster and better. I would advise getting those files onto a drive Linux Kubuntu/Ubuntu works well with, as soon as possible.
