You should update to 18.04. You can treat it like a normal release and upgrade every 6 months if you wish. You are not locked to LTS though you will have to edit a setting to get notifications for new releases or call the process manually.

Thank you, that's what i'll do.

What you lose, after end-of-life, is regular fixes and updates to your software.

You also eventually lose the ability to install new software, as the repositories disappear.
