    Is this possible?

    Hi,

I want to upgrade my PC from a rather old version 18.04 (I thought that i upgraded to 20.04 at some point but apparently not according to kinfocenter). I am not quite sure how to only reformat the small partition with the system (a small SSD disc) and not wipe out my /home on the other hard disc even though I have made a backup....
lsblk -T --output NAME,FSTYPE,LABEL,UUID,SIZE gives the following information:
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID SIZE
    sda 55,9G
    ├─sda1 ext2 ce2cc516-2c2b-45ea-986c-5268957c882a 487M
    ├─sda2 1K
    └─sda5 LVM2_member 2BrxLB-GxBj-euqV-L2Y9-pzc5-XYE6-SHiP0g 55,4G
    ├─kubuntu--vg-root ext4 08dce50f-de5b-4da8-98c4-2ff354f6b483 39,5G
    └─kubuntu--vg-swap_1 swap 18652323-461d-4283-ba7f-c4810f2efbbc 15,9G
    sdb 931,5G
    └─sdb1 ext3 29599e47-8f51-43ae-b9af-fd60ac3865ca 931,5G

Is it possible? I did try to start from the usb-stick but I think it started with the /dev/sdb part and that is not what I want.

    Welcome.

Looking at your partition scheme and your Kubuntu version (18.04 LTS), I would suggest to make a backup of your /home to an external device, boot from an GParted USB live system (https://gparted.org/download.php) and erase the drive by installing a new GPT partition table
Warning: by this you will obviously lose all your data that you have not backed up before
if your computer does not use a "legacy BIOS", create a fat32 EFI partition >300MB (e.g. 308 or 320 MB) with the esp and boot flags and go from there, e.g. installing Kubuntu 22.04.4 LTS (and because of your limited space with a swap file instead of a swap partition what is the default for Kubuntu by now).
Afterwards copy back your important data of your old /home to the new installation.

Or wait for 2,5 more weeks and install the new Kubuntu 24.04 LTS then.

Also see Overview: Kubuntu, its parent and some of its siblings for the current Kubuntu download links.
