(I've curtailed it a bit as it goes on to deal with things that I don't think are relevant to my query.)

I've got a Dell D3000 docking station with a monitor attached. It's an old VGA monitor which connects to the DVI port via an adaptor. Nothing appears on the monitor and Kubuntu does not detect an external display. My Windows laptop is simple plug-and-play so I know that the monitor works.

Anyone got any suggestions, or should I just live with it?

    A quick test can be:
Boot from a Kubuntu 23.04 live USB stick and try if it works there - if it does this probably is due to the much better multi-monitor support that was written for Plasma 5.27.x or e.g. the newer kernel (not as likely, but who knows…).
