the default font sizes when one look at the desktop is too big for me. how to reduce the sizes of fonts used in the menus (application launcher), the applications, basically anywhere fonts are used.

Go to control panel then Appearance >fonts the default to size is 10 but you can lower or raise that to what ever is comfortable for you.
What resolution is you monitor. Could be you are booting the wrong resolution for it. That can be changed if need be by going to control panel Hardware> Display and Monitor. And setting it for the correct resolution for your monitor.Dave Kubuntu 20.04 Registered Linux User #462608

Another thing in the fonts section may be to enable and adjust the DPI a little, or set it to the same or similar value Windows may be using.
