I often need to connect my PC (please see details below) to a Smart TV. I used to do it no problem with Ubuntu 16.04.
On Kubuntu 16.04, I follow the same procedure: Settings>Display>choose HMDI upon connecting the cable. I'm using the same USB cable I previously used with Ubuntu.
Before disconnecting the cable, I switch to "laptop" at Settings>Display. The moment I disconnect the cable, Plasma (if I'm using the right name for the desktop environment) goes bananas: icons disappear, the panel disappears, and so on. Re-booting the machine via Ctrl-Al-F1 doesn't help (ie, the panel is not where it should be, the desktop theme looks different, etc). Btw, I noticed that the desktop environment becomes somewhat unstable when I have loads of windows open + I'm doing two million things at once, but usually it's enough to re-boot the machine and things go back to normal.
do you have any idea? I googled the issue and found out that some people have the same problem though I haven't come across a solution.
