    SIM Card Reader

Ordered a sim card reader to attempt to transfer contact from old tracfone to new tracfone for a friend. It's the flash drive style. Will it work with Kubuntu 14.04? Looks like a pretty simple deal w/ Windows though I prefer to not go there. It's this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cell-Phone...-CDMA/46775434

    Thanks.

You want to make sure that the software and driver are PC/SC compliant. A Debian version of those two components are here:
    http://pcsclite.alioth.debian.org/
    http://pcsclite.alioth.debian.org/ccid.html

The sim reader you link to isn't very highly rated.

Here is a list of supported readers: http://pcsclite.alioth.debian.org/ccid/supported.html

To know if a smart card reader is CCID compliant and should be supported by this driver, but is not listed in the list above, just get the source code of this driver and do:

    tar xjvf ccid-x.y.z.tar.bz2
    cd ccid-x.y.z
    ./configure
    make
    sudo ./src/parse > output.txt

Then there is this application, http://www.getdeb.net/software/monosim

    which claims:
Is a simple application that can be used to read, write, update, delete and backup your sim card contacts. It open and save also some format files to manage your contacts also in a text files. To connect monosim to your smartcard you need use a standard PCSC smartcard reader as towitoko, acs, athena, blutronics, etc.

Yep you are right; PoS. I tried in Windows. Once I installed the files from the disk, took forever to figure which file to install the software from. Finally got that and it put two apps on my desktop. Elated! Doing everything I knew to do, I would always get an error message saying 2-3 errors of software not found, etc. Reinstalled software 3 times. Said screw it and uninstalled a final time. Gonna tell my friend to take the old Tracfone sim card and two new phones to Walmart and let them do it. Spent about 3 solid hours the other day moving his near 300 contacts from his phone storage to his sim card in preparation for today's "so easy a kid can do it" exercise in futility. I don't know what a "tracfone" is, so my suggestion might be silly, but in case it isn't... Why not find an android phone that uses the same size SIM, and use android's "export to storage"? Then copy the file to PC. (Your friend should do this anyway, to have a backup in case of losing or destroying the phone.) Then, do the reverse.
Now, if you're not a Google hater, using Google contacts to import the numbers to a Google account is IMO far easier than using SIM contacts. Maintaining your contacts using a computer (they usually have real keyboards!) is much better.
