I am having a WiFi Connection problem and need help,
I have been battling this problem for six months now, but this has been the best fight so far. I really believe we are close. Is it time to download a fresh Kubuntu 14.04 and re-install the OS and hope whatever is screwed is brought back into alignment again by the new installation?
I hate to do that if we can fix the problem, I believe what is wrong, when fixed, may help others.
can you do this ,,,,,click the wired network icon ,,,,,,,,,press print screen ,,,,,,,post the screenshot ,I wana see the pop up,,,,,,,,,,and we will get back to this tomarow ,,,,,,I half to go to bead now ,,,,,,gota get up for work at 5AM
Vinny, just before we got heavy into the problem tonight, I made the mistake of eating lots of potatoes. Once in a while I get a craving and have to satisfy it. Unfortunately I am diabetic.
Before we got into it, I had to take a large dose of insulin to metabolize the sugar. I should have eaten something right away, because it was a large dose, but I got excited with our progress and forgot to eat.
When I got distracted, my sugars were way too low, because I did not eat anything after taking the insulin. When they get in the 40's or 50's they affect how I think. It is a dangerous time for me, but unfortunately I don't usually realize what is happening, which is very dangerous.
When I started to crash, I got a headache, which is one of my last warnings for too low sugars. I then ate a handful of chocolate coated raisons which brought my sugars into a safer region, but unfortunately got distracted and added some work that I am sure irritated you.
You can also see on the Network monitors that eth0 is active, eth1 is inactive and wireless is inactive.
ya look at the pop up from when you clicked the network icon (little tv looking thing) in the top row of the pop up above where it says "active connections" click the left most check box ,,,it is the box to activate the wireless .
Thanks Vinny, I will try to not screw up again. Those Icons are so small, I can not read them, but I did click on the far left one. It seems to want to activate the wireless.
I get a request for password, which does not work when I use the passwords I remember. Is there a way to either change a lost password or find out what it was?
You are a great and wonderful guy. I can see I will win this one, and only because of you. Thanks for not giving up on me. Shab

The box on the left says enabled. When STEVEN-WIFI appears as an option for connection, and I click on Click on connect, it says STEVEN-WIFI is deactivated. How do I activate it?

Humm never seen that one before ,,,,,,,,,that would imply that your wireless network has been turned off/disconnected/put on hold ,,,but by who ,,,the system or the router ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we will half to think on this one .
Before you started to help me, I tried to reboot the router. Could that have been the cause. At that time, I wasn't getting much input and was trying anything that might work.

rebooting it wouldn't hurt,,,,,but it may/may not have a button on it to disable the wireless that may have gotten accidentally hit ......and maby it has some lites on it to show if the wireless is on ?
It is a Dlink Dir-601. To reset it, you unplug the power for 20 seconds. There are no switches or lights to imply what you suggest. I also have a Dlink Modem, one of the latest versions. Both have worked flawlessly since their recent purchase by me.
My Ethernet cable connects to the router, which connects to the modem. The hard line connection seems to work fine, so I suspect the router is still working properly.
Is there any advantage to resetting the router again? Are there any settings in 'System Settings' either regular or advanced that affect connection. I did not see anything that looked like it would have any affect on what we are trying to do, but my understanding, even of the terminology is lacking.
Six months ago, when my HDD failed and I had to replace it, I installed using a Toshiba backup DVD I was advised to make when I got the computer.
When I first installed Kubuntu 14.04 in the laptop, dual-boot with Windows Vista, the OS installed normally. The login screen was the normal Kubuntu Login Screen that I changed to my current desktop image you see from the screenprint. Anyway, when I used the Recovery disk to install my dual-boot system on the laptop, the login screen became Ubuntu with sound affects. At least that is how I remember it.
Anyway, since that re-installation to the new HDD, the login screen changed to an Ubuntu screen with sound effects. I actually hate it, but at least it logs me in.
Is there any possibility that the disk became corrupted and installed some Ubuntu apps in my Kubuntu OS? Probably a stupid question, but it has always troubled me when I updated my system and I saw so many ubuntu entries. I have that version of Kubuntu on a USB 3 stick and have used it many times to install on friends machines or reinstall on my own. Other than on the laptop, the installations all show Kubuntu login screens with no sound affects.
I can not think of anything else that I have forgotten to tell you that may have an impact on your diagnosis.
