    no web cam detected

    I recently acquired a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, model PP29L reference No 07146. It was running Windows Vista with no problems. I decided to get rid of Vista and installed Kubuntu 14.10 32bit. After several days of playing around and getting to know the new OS system I downloaded and installed Skype. The problem is that Skype could not detect my web cam, I also tried Cheese but had the same result, no web cam detected. I have looked into the System Settings-Hardware-multimedia but nothing there. I spent some time looking at the community help website but found it confusing, lots of different solutions to solve this problem. I would greatly appreciate if someone can give me an answer to this problem. If it's a case of downloading drivers or software then that's fine. But if it involves file settings then an 'Idiot Guide' will be needed. Many thanks. Tom (new user)

        A couple of things to check, just to eliminate the simple:
        Is there a keyboard combo that tuns the cam off and on?

        Can you copy and paste the outputs of the commands:
        lspci
        and
        lsusb
        This will give us info on if your cam is being seen by the kernel, and some device info that may help us search better.

        Your dell is still quite common out there, and I don't see any recent reports of this problem. It is entirely (but only slightly) possible that cheese is wonky, as is Skype.

        I suggest trying out Kamoso as well, and there is another tool guvcview, that works with cameras using the general 'uvc' driver.

          Many thanks for you reply to my laptop problem. I can't find any key that turns the cam on or off. I have also tried Kamoso and guvcview as suggested but no luck at all with them.
          This only leaves the output commands of lspci and lsusb.
          Being a complete novice to Kubuntu/Linux systems I don't have a clue as to how to get the information that you want. I don't want the same problems I had in the past with windows. Do you really want to delete this file, yep, opps !!!!!! shouldn't have done that. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
          Therefore I would appreciate an idiot guide of how to do this.

            Open Konsole, and type the first command - it will list a bit of info about some of your hardware. Simply copy and paste the text into your reply here. Do the same with the second command. These are just listing some basic info about some of your hardware, it is not performing any tasks or running something. We can use this info to make sure your webcam is detected, and if it is, what device id it has. Nothing that will harm your system, to be sure.
