    Black screen now after login

I am not sure if this is a bug or what.
My system was working fine, then I shut it down.
Came back and turned it on 1hr later, and this happens.

I get the log in screen, hdd icons load, kde etc.. the screen
just has a movable cursor, and chrome opens which is what I am using right now.
However but there is no desktop? If I close google chrome right now, and it will just be a black with mouse cursor.
as you can see from the image below.

Weird yet lucky that you can still use chrome.
I assume you already tried another reboot?

In case you want to restart are missing a way to do so, press Alt + Ctrl + F4 and log in on the console that's shown.
Then you can type the command for a reboot:
    Code:
    sudo shutdown -r now
    Or,
Does Alt + F2 give you a small command line at the top of your screen?
If so, type in Dolphin and hit Enter to start the file manager.

Show the hidden files by Alt + . (that's a dot)
Go to ~/.kde, right klick it and rename it to say, .kde.old

Next time you reboot a new . kde configuration will be created, hopefully resulting in a regular screen.

I tried what to mentioned above, I am back to the desktop as normal.
But before declaring this issue resolved, I will wait a few because this install has had a mind of it's own.
      I do appreciate the help.

Make sure your system is fully upgraded, either via the Muon Package Manager, Synaptic or the command line.
In case of the last the commands are:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get update
        Followed by:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
The advantage of the command line is you get very good feedback of things going wrong.

Another thought, in a different thread by someone else the suggestion was made his disk was full, this can indeed give similar issues so check both the / and /home for free space!

I am now wondering if this version is actually stable.
The computer was functioning, as normal all afternoon.
This morning I went to turn it on, received some KDE error
in the desktop. I rebooted, and I am now back to, the black screen.

I read online, that others have experienced, this very same issue.
So I am going to load 12.04, and see if it works out better.
          It's frustrating at this point.

So far you haven't mentioned what 'this version' is.
With a very well working 14.04 Beta I don't see any reason to go with a two years old distro like 12.04...

12.04 and 13.10 are both stable, the only difference could be the included drivers.
12.04 can be slightly better with older hardware, 13.10 with the newer stuff.

So the next question would be, what is the hardware?
(Sorry if I missed it in one of your other posts)

Especially important is, laptop or desktop.
If laptop what type, what video card, cpu and how much RAM.
For a desktop, the mother board, video card and how much RAM.
And how is the hard disk partitioned and formatted.
