That old chestnut, sharing with Win7

I'm having two problems with this, but one may be causing the other...


I want a folder on my Kubuntu system that my wife's W7 system can access. I created one yesterday on /home, set it to be shared and then installed SAMBA. Success. From the W7 system, I could access the folder (and also my printers, an added bonus).

Today, I had to restore /home, so had to recreate the folder. The problems started.

1. The folder will NOT let me share it. I go to the "share" tab, tick "Share with Samba" and "Allow guests", press OK and the ticks disappear. No sharing...

EDIT. Just opened Dolphin as ROOT, and the folder is shown as SHARED.

2. On the W7 system, I can see the folder, but when I try and open it, it asks for ID and PW. It didn't do that last night - maybe the missing "Allow guests" is the problem? Printing still work, though)

Well, I fixed it.

I deleted SAMBA from my Kubuntu system, then re-installed it following the instructions in this YouTube video

I don't know why it worked then didn't work before. I'm wondering if there was a SAMBA config lying around, left over from a previous attempt? Whatever, it works.
