Kubuntu stops loading after login screen

Hi,

Looking for some help! I've been running Kubuntu happily for 6 months, yet I have tried to log in today and have some problems... Basically, I load Kubuntu as normal, the PC loads up the logon screen, I enter my password and nothing happens. The mouse pointer still works but KDE doesn't load. I've tried CTRL + ALT + F6 to get to a console, but I just get a flashing - .

PC is a desktop, Dell, 64 bit, nvidia graphics, core i5 CPU, 8gb ram. Kubuntu 13.04.

Reboot. When at the log in screen press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in to the console.

After you are logged in, type:

df -hT --exclude-type=tmpfs --exclude-type=devtmpfs

Look at the space used (Use%) for your root partition. I suspect that it is over 95%.
Type:

sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo updatedb

Then type:

df -hT --exclude-type=tmpfs --exclude-type=devtmpfs

The reported space used for your root partition should be substantially less.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F8 to return to the log in screen. Log in.

Thanks for your help. I tried CTRL ALT F1 but all that happened is that I got to the flashing cursor.
I booted into recovery and run the command... Current disk space used is 6%...

Sadly this didn't work either. Whenever I try to get to a command line before or after logging in, I'm greeted with a flashing "_".
