Ati 9800 SE 3D

Hi having problems getting 3D to work with my Graphics card (ATI 9800 SE). I've trawed through loads of suggestions from various sourses But no Luckl. here is the output from various commands. if anyone can help.

Seems to be a problem with the last line?

fglrxkonf.kmdr - tried using this but it just says - Mesa (fglrx not work) trying to set it does nothing
I've edited the xorg.conf file and run the xserver set up program, i've installed fglrx from a console prior to logging in and when logged in
I have an amd cpu so have tried with the K7 and i386 kernel

Can anyone help please

fglrxinfo says that you are using ati or vesa drivers.

This is how i did it.

My Way

0 Backup xorg.conf ! >

1 Install the xorg-driver-fglrx package
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
(+fglrx-control - Control panel for the ATI graphics accelerators)

2 Add fglrx to /etc/modules. (This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded at the boot time)
(kdesu kate /etc/modules - type fglrx)

3 Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change "ati" to "fglrx"
and
Section "Device"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"

(You could reconfigure your graphic settings:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg - and choose fglrx drivers)

4 Reboot

Testing

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 XT Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

=>OK !

To get my ATI working with fglrx, I used...

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) #Okay if it is already installed
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo depmod -a
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

Sorry, I forgot to add that you need to reboot since the settings wont take effect till the next session. If it still doesn't work, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

Thanx for your assistance.

Is there any way i can remove all the things i've tried, as in my X11 there are half a dozen backups of things etc. What i mean is remove the ati driver, fglrx etc and i'll start from scratch without having to re-install Kubuntu, then i can try all the things suggested again

You could use the oldest xorg.conf (backup) or make new with
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

about reinstall:

From Apt Howto:

Hmm - to me it's from kubuntu 5.04 (hoary). Back then it was:

If you have an nforce2 chipset motherboard or if your Xorg.0.log reveals troubles when initialising AGP, put this in the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"

I have nforce.

I have found this:

Strangest thing just happened downloaded the xorg core update which screwed up the system downgraded the xorg core and guess what I HAVE 3D WORKING

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9800 SE Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5946 (8.27.10)

then upgraded to the fixed core and its still working YIPPEEE
