    No login screen appear

I followed some advice to install hotplug to get my scanner working. After reboot I get the normal splash with all the thingies showing loading. It pauses very long at "configuring network" but then continues. Then I usually get the blank (black) screen for a few seconds and, the watch appears and then the login screen appear. But now I get another Kubuntu splash with a status bar, and there my box hangs.
CTRL ALT F1 takes me to a command prompt.
I've tried to reset the X-config and my login screen from another post, but that still does not help.
My menus etc. is still available from the command prompt. I am willing to uninstall hotplug, if that will help, but I think the installation messed up my GUI and login screen. How can I go back and fix it? (I'm currently unable to dial up, but I still have my Dapper Live CD.

    Problem solved by me.
    from command prompt$
    sudo apt-get remove hotplug
    sudo apt-get install kde --reinstall
The latter failed dismally, but *maybe* something was hooked in right.
Still does not solve my scanner problems any reason why hotplug was dropped and how to get my USB scanner working?
