Installing Alien arena or any other software thru apt/Muon/Apper/Synaptic shouldn't (read=will not) require /root though it will require admin privilegies(=password) so safety wise this shouldn't be any issue as far as I know.

Now ...helmets on... mark thread as [SOLVED] & get ready for head shot

    @GreyGeek
When I had a ponder on this problem, and pondering doesn't come easy these days, I recalled that I had had this difficulty about a year ago with AA and PCLinuxOS.
I checked back in my notes, and the solution was revealed. Apparently it is quite a common problem involving AA initially trying to create a symlink in /usr/share/games/alien-arena/ as your user when you first launch it.
I installed AA using Synaptic and therefore I was working as root, but AA did not ask for root permission to install.
Do you reckon it is a security hazard?

It seems to do with permissions, and here is the "unorthodox but still works" fix for your problem.
At the terminal launch Dolphin as superuser ie $ sudo dolphin
When it launches, navigate to /root/user/games
    Right click on Alien-Arena
Permission Tab, change all to Can Read or Write.
    Click Ok
    Reboot.
    Enjoy Alien Arena.
Does the game force you to install it as root? It shouldn't. There is no /root/user directory in /root. Alien must of created it. To me, that looks like a security risk.
IF it insists installing as root then I'd create a chroot jail and run it from there.

    Running Kubuntu 64-bit v 11.10.
    Downloaded AA using Synaptic.
Program will not launch from the Application launcher or from /USR/GAMES
Getting same error as you on CLI.

    Could not exec default.cfg
    Could not exec config.cfg
    Console initialized.
    --------- [Loading Renderer] ---------
    Master server at 69.136.224.226:27900
    Sending shutdown to 69.136.224.226:27900
    recursive shutdown
    Error: Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx

    I guess it's broken.
    Oh well, back to Nexuiz!
