I have been trying to remove old kernels from synaptic and but in addition to "Linux_image-X.X.XX-XX-generic" i have "Linux_image-X.X.XX-XX-preempt", "Linux_image-X.X.XX-XX-server", and "Linux_image-X.X.XX-XX-virtual", should all of these be removed also?

yes, unless you installed any of them for a particular reason - the normal 'generic' kernel is best for normal useSelf-built: Asus PRIME B550M-K/Ryzen 5600GT/32Gb/Intel ARC B580 12Gb/KDE neon
