    Wi-fi on Hoary

    hoary is the only distro that I can get to work on Dell Inspiron 2600 but I need to get wi-fi now. I am new at this so need advice on which pcmcia LAN card or wireless usb adaptor is compatible and then what to do - explained as to an idiot!

    What distros have you tried to load onto your machine?

    Have you looked at non-kde or gnome - centric options such as Lubuntu or xubuntu (if you want to stick with 'buntus) which give you the benefit of up to date kernels but a lightweight desktop.

    A massive advantage of looking at this route is that the range of wireless equipment that will work with newer kernels is far wider than those that will work with Hoary, which reached end of life over 4 years ago.

      No, I haven't tried either of those but will give them a go. All the later Ubuntu and Kibuntu wont work on the Dell. Thanks, I will let you know how I get on with these.

        Hi...

        I'm not sure if this will work in Lubuntu or xubuntu, but here is a list of compatible cards that hopefully will point you in the right direction of what to purchase. The key here is the chipset used, not the brand.

            The specs for your Dell are not that much different from my IBM T20. I currently run Kubuntu 10.04, and while not very peppy on boot, it works well and is stable.

            In the past I have tried a lot of different distros including some of the BSD flavors such as PC-BSD. I've run Xubuntu and really liked the XFCE experience.

            Can you describe the difficulties you've had with had with the distros after Hoary? There were some that worked better than others on my system, but Lucid is on the whole the best Kubuntu I've ever run.

              I would have to agree, even though I've only run two other versions previously, 5.10 and 6.06.

              @67GTA: Good find!
