Yep, I'm afraid GG is right -- you're probably fighting a dying hard drive. That may be why the preceding OS didn't work so well, at the end of its life.

Yeah, i'm afraid so. Luckily new harddrives in small sizes are cheap!

EDIT : Well, i guess we can call this one solved. Even Kubuntu's magic can heal broken harddrives.
Thank you helpful people on the forum! I'll be sure to check back and read some more topics after i've installed a new hdd!
