    Kernal for a Distro

Suppose I want to download a distro of linux and know that my computer is not compatible with kernal 2.6.32 or earlier (for any distro). How can I tell which kernal a distro is using without it already installed?

I need to get a hold of a distro with kernal 2.6.33 or later and one that is user friendly (it's for my wife's laptop). I wanted Kubuntu but it's incompatible with the Intel Core i3/i5/i7. I can't even get it to install (some can but then have crashes and graphics issues).

I've tried K10.10, K10.04 and both have failed. I'm trying openSUSE 11.3 and Fedora 14 now, but don't expect them to work.

    Any suggestions?

After you install you can change the kernel. I'd be interested to know what it is you need though.

        Dell Latitude E5410

I can't get ANY distro to install yet so I don't have that option.

If you Google: ubuntu Dell Latitude E5410
it brings up a lot of stuff.

          Look at e.g. http://www.famegadget.com/search/ubu...latitude+e5410 . It says:
It is pre-installed with Windows 7, Vista or Ubuntu 9.10.
          Look at e.g. http://forums.techarena.in/portable-devices/1362589.htm . It says:
This Dell Latitude E5410 notebook is compatible with Linux Ubuntu 9.10
On the Dell Forum it says:
The touchpad of my brand new Latitude E5410 is not recognized correctly with ubuntu 10.04.
          - although this is a fault, it suggests that installation goes a bit further past the stage you mention

I remember that Dell issued their own special Ubuntu install disks. You might give this a try:
          http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/lucid/

Does the direction of your questioning lead to Dell...?
