How are you trying to play the DVDs? In VLC, I use Media>Open Disc>DVD and it works without errors.

If you're using this method, are you getting any errors?
    Home: Kubuntu 12.04-amd64; Intel i7-860 on Intel DH55PJ; Nvidia 9500GT; 6GB RAM
Network Slave: Xubuntu 11.10-x86; Intel P4-Prescott on MSI; 2GB RAM; Nvidia FX5200
Portable: Xubuntu 11.10-amd64; Asus EeePC 1015PEM

              What version of vlc.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.4 and the VLC version is 1.0.6 Golden Eye. It plays DVDs just fine.

obvious question but have you tried multiple different DVDs?

also, when you have the DVD inserted, does it show up in Dolphin (does your computer recognize the DVD drive and medium)?

Mine shows up in the file manager. Two folders, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. AUDIO_TS is empty.

                              OK I figured it out.

                              Code:
                              sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
Has to be run to play encrypted DVDs.
