64 bit 10.04 install panic [SOLVED]

I'm trying to replace fedora 14 with a copy of kubuntu I downloaded today (10.04 AMD64). I'm installing it on an intel core 2 duo with 4 gig of sexy fast ram and I also have installed, on other drives, W7 and two data drives. It's running an nvidia graphics card.

On boot from the CD I get to choose either to check the disc, install or try. None of the options actually runs, all drop to the screen with kubuntu and 5 dots going blue/white. At this point I get a kernel panic after a few seemingly random errors:

After "generating locales..." I get /usr/sbin/locale-gen line 223: /bin/sed: I/O error. then about 2 pages of errors and tracebacks in several python scripts, finally spitting out:

    Using CD-ROM Mount point /cdrom/
    Identifying...
    Scanning disc for files
    Found Label (correct label)
    //////
    bla bla
    Good signature from CDRom
    skipping nonexistent file /cdrom/dists/lucid/main/binary-amd64/Packages
    ......../restricted/binary-amd64/Packages
Subprocess gzip returned error code 100
gzip failed, perhaps disc is full
    unknown user ubuntu
unknown user ubuntu...repeat 3 more times
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Disc error do you think, or hardware issue??

Either create a bootable usb key or reburn the image at slowest speed. I read recently that because of the squashfs compression on the iso, you need a deep and reliable burn. I think I also remember that you need to force tao mode if you are having cd issues.

    Worth a try.

Turns out it was a disc fault, burned another copy and it seems to function ok.
