    How to set up printspooling?

I have Kubuntu and a USB Canon MX310printer. We can now reach this printer from our Windows computer over our home network.

    Problem:
When printing a document the computer freezes, because (I think) it prints direct to my printer and not to a buffer (spooling).

    How to solve this.

You need to clarify: Are you printing 'from' Windows to the printer, or from Kubuntu? What version of Kubuntu are you using, and what version of KDE?

We print from Windows XP and 7 computers over the home network to the Kubuntu 10.4 pc where the printer is USB connected. KDE 4 (downloaded today)

Re: How to set up printspooling?

The notion of a Linux printer installation having no spool strikes me as "unnatural", although (knowing Linux) anything is possible.

The other odd thing is the Canon MX310 does not show up here: http://www.openprinting.org/printers

What driver are you using -- where did you find it?

If the version of Kubuntu is recent - Karmic or newer - there is already a know problem with USB printers - they don't show up for management. This 'bug' has already been reported on launchpad and bugs.kde.

I installed the driver in kubuntu canon MP180 because this would be better according to some Internet articles than the old working MP150.

I happen to have a Canon Pixma that has no free driver for Linux, and I think you have the same problem. I had good luck with a purchased driver from here: http://www.turboprint.info/

If I remember correctly, the price is around $35USD. Save the download carefully, and the key they e-mail you.

Well I know from the past the MP150 driver did print well so I will remove the 180 and report back if this helps.
