New to Kubuntu! Casual Gnome User. Help me with the Upgrade, please!

    Hi kubuntuforums.net,

I love the look of the new KDE, so I decided to try Kubuntu rather than Ubuntu.

I just spent several days battling with my wireless card and finally got it to work! Woo!

Then I added the backports PPA because I wanted the new Amarok, and this is what my system looks like now...

I seem to have lost all transparency. Oxygen now looks ugly. My borders no longer have a glow or a shadow. Obviously the KDE 4.4 upgrade broke something. Has anyone else had this problem?

I know other people had problems with plasma crashing after the update. I had this problem but was able to fix it by installing the plasma-desktop package. But it looks terrible!

I have tried the following commands:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get dist-update
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
    sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop

First, have you tried Alt-Shift-F12 to see if it by chance Compositing was suspended?

Moonrise has a point. Can you publish your machine specs, esp. graphic card?

      Either way try this:

      Quote from rog:
      Reset only the plasma desktop

      1) Stop the plasma
      Code:
      Code:
      kquitapp plasma-desktop

The applications that are not using the plasma-desktop are still working: Krunner (Alt+F2), Dolphin, Konqueror, Konsole, ...

      2) Rename the plasma config files:
      Code:
      ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
      Code:
      ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
      Code:
      ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
      Code:
      ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc
      3) Restart the plasma:
      Code:
      Code:
      plasma-desktop
This should reset the plasma-desktop to the default.
      Hope that helps
