No sound with flash and wmv

    Hello,

I have a fresh installation of Karmic. I've installed Firefox and Kubuntu restricted extras with any error or problem.

However, I don't get any sound with proprietary videos such as flash and wmv.
They both worked fine on my laptop with previous versions of Kubuntu.
Other sounds are being played (mpg, miscellaneous computer sounds, etc).

To resolve the problem, I just tried to reinstall flash using the following command:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin
Which gave me the following error:

    Code:
Package adobe-flashplugin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package adobe-flashplugin has no installation candidate
How can I determine if the package is obsolete or if a new source has to be added?
If you could kindly share how you installed flash on a clean installation of Karmic that would be helpful too.

I would first check to see if all my chanels are turned up in Kmix.

click the speker icon in the system tray click mixer and then settings and make shur all are checked... now make shure all are turned up aspeshaley PCM as some times the flash sound seams to run thru that wile other sounds come frome other sorses.

      Try installing flashplugin-installer instead

        Thank you for your post.

        Ran
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer
The following was the error message:
        Code:
flashplugin-installer is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I think it was installed when I installed kubuntu restricted extras.

In Firefox (if that's your browser): click Tools>Add-ons>Plugins. Look for an entry called "Shockwave Flash". If it is listed, the flashplugin installer has done its thing. If not, try to run it from Ff: Tools>Addons.

If it is installed, you problem is in your sound system. I suspect that this is the case because you're having problems with both Flash and wmv. Double click the Kmix loudspeaker symbol and follow Vinny's advice. If maxing out ALL your sound channels doesn't work, go to K>"System Settings">Multimedia and fool around with the "device preferences" there. (Someone who is more expert than I will have to advise on which preference does what.) If that doesn't work. You may need to add a different backend. The only one that I have at this time is "Xine" and my sound works.

Messing with the PCM settings solved the problem. Thanks.
