    How do I change my resolution before Kubuntu boots? Editing XORG..NEW Prob

    I know how to solve the problem but don't know how to get to the right location to solve the problem.


    I've installed Kubuntu 9.1 and everything is fine however I was at a friend's house using his giant monitor and the resolution is out of range for my monitor at home. How do I change my resolution before Kubuntu boots?

    i'm just going to reinstall Kubuntu 9.10 but I would still like to know how to get to the screen, in case this happens once more.

      If you are using 9.10, then it's probably grub2 (aka grub-pc).
      First, if you can boot the system with a live CD, then you need to get into the /boot/grub/grub/cfg file. Note this is a read-only file, so you will have to do everything as sudo, even to look at it.

      Somewhere around 25 lines from the top, there will be a line that says, set gfxmode=YYYxZZZ
      with Y and Z being the numbers that define the resolution of the boot menu. Se those to something that will work for your monitor. Further down, in the actual boot entries, you will see lines that start with the work linux, and end with entries that look like vga=###. You can delete the vga=### and splash and quiet stuff; that should get you booted up. To make these changes permanent once you are booted, you will have to change the GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT lines in /etc/default/grub, and run sudo update-grub.

      But there may be another problem. If you are copying your friend's system, it may be set up for an entirely different video card/driver/monitor combination. You may be able to boot the system into the default VESA driver, but you will sooner or later have to install the proper video drivers to get everything working right.

        Just finished my install and got it up and running. It was installed on my pc but with his monitor.

          well, as I was typing that I was waiting for a download. I updated my system and rebooted and the same message is coming up now.

          Out of Range

          i'm not sure how to fix it now.
