    How to Setup File Sharing

I am trying to setup a folder in Kubuntu 9.10 to be shared over the network. I right-click the folder, then go to Properties. Then, on the Share tab it says:

You need to be authorized to share folders.
I click Configure File Sharing button. A prompt comes up for my password. I enter password and then nothing happens. I click Configure File Sharing button again and nothing happens.

Thank you for the link, but those instructions look way more complicated than it needs to be for simple file sharing.

After installing kdenetwork-filesharing and samba, everything is working as expected.

Perhaps, for the sake of user-friendliness, there should be a prompt that offers installing these packages (like the multimedia restricted extras suggestion) when a user attempts to enable file sharing for a folder. Otherwise, it just seems to be broken.

If you phrase it right, perhaps it could perhaps fit under "One Hundred Paper Cuts" https://edge.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts

Aha. Thanks! I've got plenty of papercuts to report.

I feel motivated to help *buntu (and Linux in general) improve but I didn't know that a resource like this was set up so that something might actually be accomplished by making these kind of suggestions.

Btw, I got my mother up and running with Kubuntu today (she has been using Ubuntu for the past 6 months). So far she is loving the shiny new computer

I agree. When I found this problem I filed it under YAPE (yet another packaging error)
