SIS OpenChrome driver support, IIRC, in *ubuntu is iffy. It caught my eye, and that's why I pointed it out.

There is nothing to recommend. If in fact you have an SIS OpenChrome graphics card/chip, that's what you have.

Have you looked at this yet? I think it explains your problem pretty clearly, and what you need to do to resolve it.

I have.... Actually I outlined my problem in following that procedure in my long post on Page 1 (the one that you commented on). I think the root of the problem is that I'm not command-line savvy, so in following that procedure, I'm basically typing in commands only having a vague idea of what is going on.

Boo ya, but one small problem. I can't launch the program that changes my desktop resolution. Am I correct in saying that I can change this from xorg.conf?

I've reviewed this thread, and I don't see where you identified what version of Kubuntu you installed. So, what version?

K Menu > System Settings > Display > Size & Orientation

You don't have access to this?

It doesn't open. I get the window bar in the system tray, but no window.

And when you click on the minimized 'window' in the Panel it doesn't maximize?
