sound issue 9.04

At some point in the last month I lost sound. I have tried the FAQ's but run into issue with the lack of knowledge I have. I started using linux about 3 months ago so I am limited with what I can perform. is there some way to roll my machine back to an earlier date to restore whatever it is I screwed up to remove my sound?

Did you check the mixed in the panel? (looks like a speaker)

Also, the Multimedia configuration in System Settings? You can try different devices there ... (select oe or the other and try right away)
