    video problems

so, after tons of googling and forum searching, i'm finally giving in and asking for help. i just upgraded from hardy to jaunty, and post-upgrade, i've lost all video playback. i'm trying to be able to play both dvds and avi files. mplayer and vlc shut off as soon as i open a file. kaffeine plays the audio but instead of video i only get a blue screen. i've downloaded libdvdcss2, win32codecs, and the kubuntu restricted extras package. as per another thread, i tried changing drivers in the xine engine parameters gui in kaffeine, but i've only been able to switch one time to the xshm driver, which gave me super choppy, incorrectly colored, and very slow video. every time i try and change to something else, it gives me the following error message:

Error: Can't init new Video Driver xvmc - using auto!

i've also edited my xorg.conf as per another thread with an option line that i can't recall at the moment (not helpful i know, but i just checked my xorg.conf to see what it was, and it's not even there... apparently i didn't do that right either...)

anyway, i'm at a total loss at this point.

    i'm running KDE 4.2.2 with kubuntu 9.04.

any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

    Hardware/Drivers

    Is your hardware/driver detected ?

What tells: K > Applications > System > System Logs Viewer and there X.org.Log

This is showing a text file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    Fast lane (ḱonsole):

    Probed:
    Code:
    grep "(--)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    Errors:
    Code:
    grep "EE" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    Warnings:
    Code:
    grep "WW" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    Software errors

If you start a mediaplayer at the konsole do you get any error messages ?

    With the mplayer
    Code:
    mplayer /path/to/clip.avi
    Messages to the file:
    Code:
    logsave errors.txt mplayer /path/to/clip.avi
    man logsave
    NAME
logsave - save the output of a command in a logfile

    SYNOPSIS
    logsave [ -asv ] logfile cmd_prog [ ... ]

      Re: video problems

      hi thanks for the response!

in the log file you indicated, there is only one line with a warning:

      Warning intel(0): DRI2 requires UXA
there are a few "probed" (honestly, i'm not exactly sure what that means), and no errors.

definitely errors on mplayer from konsole:

Maybe > [i945gm] all video players crash with BadAlloc error (no Compiz)

        If you try with:
        Code:
        mplayer -vo x11 /path/to/clip.avi
        any change ?

        man mplayer

          I'd say review here:

          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582

Back up your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and then edit the current version and add:

          Code:
          	Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
in the "Device" stanza, as recommended in the linked guidance. If it doesn't help, there are also two lines to add when you use EXA acceleration, which is what you want to do if UXA doesn't work.

ok so i tried what you said (thanks for the reply!), and the video worked, but was out of sync with the audio. also the konsole output now says my system is too slow to play this file, though i've never had a problem before... here's the output:

            Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
            - Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
            - Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
            - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
            - Slow video output
            - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
            - Slow CPU
            - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
            e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
            - Broken file
            - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
            - Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
            - Try -cache 8192.
            - Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
            - Try -nocache.
            Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

              Re: video problems

Have you tried those "dibl's" proposed xorg.conf tricks ?

If those don't help maybe the other -vo options will help (gl/gl2...)

The x11 is not using hardware acceleration, that's why => "Your system is too SLOW to play this!"

              Available video output drivers, konsole:
              Code:
              mplayer -vo help

About vo drivers > SMPlayer FAQ
              3) Output drivers (directx, xv, x11, gl, alsa, oss...) what are they? Which one is the best?

MPlayer has several output drivers, for video and sound. SMPlayer allows you to select the one you want among all of them (Preferences->General).

For video it's recommended that you use xv (linux) or directx (windows). They use hardware acceleration and give the best performance.

The inconvenience about directx for Windows Vista users is that it disables Aero.

x11 and directx:noaccel are drivers without hardware acceleration. They give the worst performance. Moreover directx:noaccel gives a bad quality in fullscreen mode.

gl and gl2 will use 3D acceleration from the graphic card. They will give better performance than directx:noaccel and x11 but no so much as directx or xv. gl/gl2 can be useful for Windows Vista users.

For sound, you should usually use oss or alsa in linux. I don't like esd or arts, they use to use more CPU.

In windows the sound drivers are dsound and win32. I read that dsound can cause sometimes audio-video sync problems. If you notice that problem try win32 instead.

Other drivers allows you to save the video as image files or write the sound to the disk. These drivers are not officially supported by SMPlayer. Use them only if you know what you're doing.
