Please help kubuntu-8.10 - freeze on loading desktop

I tried kubuntu (kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386) on my desktop, a Dell optiplex gx260 with

    pentium 4 cpu 2.53Ghz/1Gb RAM/40Gb HD with Intel 82845G graphics/82801 USB/IntelPRO1000

Network card and Soundmax Audio. It freezes(?) just after loading the desktop with a sound

burst/beep on speakers, from then i can move the mouse, switch num lock but can't do

anything more than that, can't click, can't even reboot, ctrl-alt-del has no effect.
Only way to reboot is through holding down the power button (can hear beep when pressing).
Before loading desktop can see loading icons/panels (one looking hard disk) and two or more and
    some screen blinks.
Looks like system doesn't hang but can't go loading further.
I have tried several times install/uninstall but don't have any clue how to fix it.
I have some computer h/w skills but just novice on linux....
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you read my previous post? Try a different session, as it sounds like the same prob..
thats exactly what happened to me.
And you do realise ctrl+alt+delete doesnt work as its not windows?
Try pushing esc and go to the menu as it loads, and go to fix xserv.
