Is there any way to change the screen resolution ?

If you want to change the font size go to the "K" icon and select System/System Settings. From there go to Appearance and you can adjust fonts for specific parts of your desktop or everywhere at once.

For resolution what video card are you using?

Video Card, no idea. I will look up the Bill of 3 years ago when I built the PC.

Might be this:-

I believe (maybe someone who uses ATI ) could verify but i think you need to download the ATI binary X.org driver with the Adept Installer than get the ATI Catalyst Control Center again available through the Adept. With this you can change resolutions and any other goodies your card is capable of like TV out etc.

If you are using an LCD flat screen then you need to run it at its "native resolution" (the res it was designed for), else it will be fuzzy.

The ATI proprietary drivers are installed via the restricted driver module, not adept. i.e. KMenu->applications->system->hardware drivers. It will download the latest driver and it will take a while. BEFORE you do this, familiarize yourself with the procedure used to go back to the old driver if its not working.

To switch driver in case it doesn't boot, you would have to edit xorg.conf (located: /etc/xorg.conf) To edit it from the command line, you'd type

sudo nano /etc/xorg.conf

To so, press crtl-w and ctrl-x to exit I think.

Have a look what the current driver is. There will probably be a line like:

driver       "vesa"

if its using the default driver and

driver       "fglrx"

if the ATI driver is enabled.

With the correct driver, you should then be able to change the resolution in system settings->display. One can also force/suggest a resolution
by editing the xorg.conf file like so:

but that is not the "right" method and could potentially be dangerous.

I'm a user and want to avoid major guru type tuning that would blow away an otherwise excellent OS !

If I knacker it, then huge pain reinstalling everything !

I remember many hours spent on failing to install a printer on Suse !

I was hoping for a GUI set of boxes with 800 x etc, 1200 x etc. 1600 x etc and I'd just click on one !

I'm terrified !

Go into k menu (aka the start button) /system settings/display and see what settings changes you can effect there.
