very new...no sound!

This is my first venture into linux, so bare with me.
I just installed kubuntu with MCE on a gateway laptop but i am not getting sound out of it.
in MCE when i click on the audio tab it does not see any sound device.
would know how to trouble shoot this in windows, but like i said, im new to linux (and excited to learn!).
