compiling a new kernel for amd64 same as i386?

I have a AMD64 Quad core. I'm currently running Kubuntu 64 bit 8.04.

I want to learn how to compile a new kernel to be optimized for my pc. My question is to compile a kernel for AMD64 is the same process as to compile i386?
