I started with GNOME Ubuntu 7.10 installed by Dell. I used to be on SuSE so I used Synaptic to get a lot of KDE stuff. My computer is now an Ubuntu/Kubuntu Frankenstein.
With Kmail Composer's spelling preferences set to Dictionary=ispell default, Encoding=US ASCII, and Client=international ispell Composer marks every word as misspelled and suggests no correct spellings. When Client=aspell the results are the same except that *capitalized* words are recognized and capitalized corrections are suggested.
Incidentally, the Firefox spell checking system is working fine. I think there is something in the 7.10 KDE group that I can't find. Synaptic doesn't find Kspell or Sonnet packages. (Adept launches without root privileges [good] and doesn't ask for any [bad] so it launches with a complaint that it can't do anything.)
