    Stuck Package???

From the menu, I choose "Add/Remove Programs". Then select anything new package I want from Adept Installer.

Click "Apply Changes". The progress bar moves as it's downloading, and then another progress bar for installation progress.

Then it gets stuck. Stuck forever! I look at the "details", and it says this :

    "
    Setting up dkms (2.0.17.4-0ubuntu2)
    0
    "
    <STUCK HERE FOREVER>

    I am using Gutsy Gibbon.

Any help greatly appreciated! I'm stuck!

    Re: Stuck Package

The problem has something to do with the "Dynamic Kernel Module Support" (dkms) not being able to build a module for something -- possibly a wireless chip? You might need to do a little independent searching on Ubuntu Forum, using your particular hardware model, and see if you can turn anything up. I don't think your network connection is working quite right.

    Here's some general guidance.

It's better to use the KMenu>System>Adept Manager utility to do your package installations. That "Add/Remove Programs" is kind of an introductory thing for Windows emigrants, I think, but it doesn't provide the full range of package management functions.

To be certain that the package manager (database) on your system is problem free, open the KMenu>System>Konsole (a "text mode" window to the Linux Command Line Interface "CLI") and issue these commands, in sequence:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoclean
Hopefully you will see no errors -- if you do, copy them and paste them into a reply here.

    Next, issue this one:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
If the "sudo apt-get update" command generates the same dkms error, then that is kind of expected -- that issue will have to be resolved before any updates or packages can be downloaded to your system.

If the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" command produces no errors, then your package management system is good to go, and you merely have some network connectivity issue to sort out.

    Hope this helps.

      Re: Stuck Package

Thanks for the help so far. None of those commands generate any errors.

After, I went to "System" -> "Adept Manager" and marked a package for uninstall (AMSN).

Again, it hangs, like this :

(Reading database ... 103110 files and directories currently installed.)
      Removing amsn ...
      Setting up dkms (2.0.17.4-0ubuntu2) ...
      <STUCK>

      Any more ideas!?!?!?

      Thanks again,

      Bob

Hmmmmm. Well, then let's take the bold approach. Open the Konsole again, and this time enter:

        Code:
        sudo apt-get update
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install
and observe whether it installs whatever updates you did not already have.

        Next,
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install exact-name-of-the-package-you-want
Let us know if you observe errors.

          For Gutsy Installations:

Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages. If you still have problems, open a console and type:
          Code:
          sudo dpkg --configure -a

A crafty Google search reveals this is not a new or unique situation:

                http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=650756

                http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-652323.html

In that second link, it appears the guy had success by marking the dkms package for removal, and then installing the downloaded .deb file. But I don't know why you couldn't just do
                Code:
                sudo apt-get remove dkms
                and then do
                Code:
                sudo dpkg --configure -a
                and then
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install dkms
                and have it fully installed.

                      Re: Stuck Package

I think I had the same problem; the god news is I know how to fix it.
The bad news is you'll have to re-install Kubuntu.
So after you reinstal Kubuntu; there will be message that will say you have possibility to update your system. You ignore that and go to Konsole write: sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade
After this upgrading will start around 30-40 minutes in the process there will be question whether you like to change something or to keep the old version you press Y meaning yes i would like to change it (it says that n as in no is default but don't press it you'll get stuck again)
I hope this will work, maybe first few times adept will have some problems so try instaling with sudo apt-get ...; but if you update to new version 8.04 Hardy Heron it will work just fine.
You update in adept package manager you have an button on right side with upwards arrow and if you hover your mouse it will say update click that and you'll get the newest version of kubuntu.

OT: can any one help me with this problem: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3093333.0

Sorry Snowhog... yes I did try that.

Adept got stuck as usual when I tried to install a new package, so I executed the code you put in your post...(sudo dpkg --configure -a)

                        I got this :
