    Questions re: Adept/Synaptic, Dolphin/Konqueror

    Hello,

As I'm new to Kubuntu and only slightly less new to Linux I had a couple of quick questions which occurred to me as I continue my attempts to get Kubuntu working on my other computer.

I see that Kubuntu uses a package manager called Adept rather than Synaptic. Both google searches and browsing through the Ubuntu wiki seem to turn up a heck of a lot more information and help for using Synaptic than for Adept. Also I have to say that, having experimented with Ubuntu a little on another machine, I find Synaptic somewhat more elegant than Adept. So: is there a way to use Synaptic in Kubuntu, or am I stuck with Adept?

Relatedly, I notice that when Adept is open, there are two upgrade buttons at the top: "full upgrade" and "version upgrade". I was unable to find information on what these mean. Could anyone explain the difference, when they are used?

Next question, similar to the first: Although KDE comes with Konqueror, I see it uses a file manager called Dolphin. Is there a way to use Konqueror for the file manager in Kubuntu, or is the version of Konqueror that comes with Kubuntu a web browser only? (I'd prefer, if possible, to use Firefox for my web browser and Konqueror for my file manager.)

Thanks to anyone who can advise.

    of course there is

you can either use adept (the irony!) and select the synaptic package for install, or type in a console:
    sudo apt-get install synaptic
    and that's it

System Settings > Default Applications > File Associations > inode > directory > application preference order (dialog to the right): move konqueror up, or add it if it isn't already in the list

    or

KDE Control Center > KDE Components > File Associations > inode > directory and the same method as above

Does Synaptic then automatically take over, or do I have to do something like what you described for Konqueror to put it first? Or do I just uninstall Adept after Konqueror is installed?

Kubuntu forums have : Kubuntu Forums > Important Information > Documentation > How To's and Experimentation/Customization/Optimization

There you can find: FAQ: Package Managers

=> Just install Synaptic and you can use Synaptic.

Wow, my poking around didn't turn up any of that! I fail at google. Thank you for the links!

EDIT: I see from the first link that Synaptic is GTK+ based, while KDE is Qt based. (Honestly, I have no idea what this means exactly, only that they are apparently not mutually compatible). Does this mean there will be conflicts or incompatibilities trying to use Synaptic in Kubuntu? Or do they work together OK?

You can use Synaptic in the Kubuntu (if you will). No problems. Graphical package managers are "just" front-ends (or graphical user interfaces) to the dpkg/apt.

            Note
You can use one package manager at the time. If you try to launch two at the same time:
            Unable to get exclusive lock

This usually means that another package management applicatinon (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first.

The biggest difference to the ordinary user is that GTK applications in the Kubuntu (KDE) will use: K > System Settings > Look & Feel > GTK Styles and Fonts...
