Re: video converter
I would use ffmpeg.
ffmpeg
multimedia player, server and encoder - Medibuntu package
This package contains the ffplay multimedia player, the ffserver streaming
server and the ffmpeg audio and video encoder. They support most existing
file formats (AVI, MPEG, OGG, Matroska, ASF...) and encoding formats (MPEG,
DivX, MPEG4, AC3, DV...).
#1 I'm using Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)
For legal reasons /1/ ordinary Ubuntu repositories do have cripled (not all of the necessary things enabled) version, but Medibuntu repositories do have version with all options enabled. As told /2/:
This package is built with the "risky" option, to enable mp3/mp4/h264/amr
support. Therefore, it is in Medibuntu as it might violate patents.
Hyper Video Converter

Description:
this is a frontend for ffmpeg I have made because I wanted something, that let's me quickly convert videos from konqueror without typing 3-line-commands in the console.

Here is some good info. I have used PSPVC in the past. It ran, but was really slow for me.
