    Installing... Anything.

I guess I should begin this by saying that this is my first experience at all with a Linux OS. My Windows XP family PC just died, and this is also my the first time that I've had my own computer. This is also the first day that the computer has been running.

So, if you hadn't guessed, I'm slightly overwhelmed by everything going on at the moment. :P

Add that to the fact that I had some amount of difficult getting Kubuntu installed and... Yeah.

But my problem right now is installing... Umm... Anything.

To begin with, any time that I open up Adept Manager, I get a message saying that another process is using the packaging system database... But there's not. At least not that I know of. So I typically only get it open as read only, if I respond that I don't want to resolve the issue.

Also... Say I want to use Konsole to install Banshee. It seems simple enough, but when I try to I get the message

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the proble
A lot of this is kind of foreign to me... Any help would be appreciated.

First, do you know what version of Kubuntu you installed? If you are not sure, open a console (K Menu | System | Konsole) and type:
    Code:
    lsb_release -a
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

Okay. Oh, and welcome to the Kubuntu Forums!

        For Gutsy Installations:
Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages. If you still have problems, open a console and type:
        Code:
        sudo dpkg --configure -a
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

          Thanks.

I'm running into the same problem of Adept Manager saying that another process is using the packaging system database. I don't know what to do about that happening, because I don't know why. A message comes up asking if I would like to resolve the problem. Hitting yes gives me the KDE Crash Handler, with the backtrack showing

Hitting no opens up the Adept Manager still, but all of the menus are grayed out and unclickable.

          Any ideas?

Before we continue, let's insure you don't have another problem. Press Alt+F2 (Alt key and the F2 key) Type kcontrol. Click on Regional & Accessibility | Country/Region & Language
On the Locale tab, ensure that you Country or region is listed as well as your Languages. If either is missing, select your country and add you Language.

              Forgot to mention that

              sudo dpkg --configure -a
              worked. Thanks a bunch.

But Adept Manager not working is worrying.

I've set the region like you said. Language was already set.

                Re: Installing... Anything.

                To fix Adept errors:
                Open a console and type:
                Code:
                sudo dpkg --configure -a
should fix it, else continue with
                Code:
                sudo apt-get clean
                Code:
                sudo apt-get update
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install
