Kubuntu / Ubuntu forums - same difference?

    Hi,

I've found that a number of fixes for issues I've had with my new install of Kubuntu 7.10 have been found on the Ubuntu forums pages (ubuntuforums.org)...

Is there any reason that kubuntu & ubuntu couldn't do a but more 'info-sharing', since it would make life a lot easier for most new users (not having to trawl through two differernt forums).b

Would it be possible to have common user-logins or access to each others databases?

Being a newbie, I'm assuming (hoping?) that there's none of this KDE/Gnome rivalry between forums...

I know about the Gnone/KDE difference between the two distros, but many of the issues raised are common to both.

    It would be nice...

    Just a thought...

    Cheers,

    Mike.

Re: Kubuntu / Ubuntu forums commin together?

You'll find, there are many forums that contain relevant information about *buntu issues (kubuntuforums.org, ubuntuforums.org, linuxforums.org, debianforums.org, linuxmint.com/forum, etc.); the main reason for there being two different forums is the Ubuntu forum focuses primarily on Gnome issues and the Kubuntu forum focuses on KDE (their "internals" are virtually the same). You'll find the Linux community very friendly. I'm not ignorant enough to state you won't encounter KDE/Gnome/etc. rivalry on these forums, but will say I have nothing against Gnome - just prefer KDE; most of the members here feel the same way.

Anyway, welcome to the Kubuntu forums

Re: Kubuntu / Ubuntu forums commin together?

Kubuntuforums is separate from ubuntuforums, and is is owned and operated by Opensource, and not by Ubuntu/Canonical. There definitely is no Gnome/KDE rivalry going on between the 2 forums, at least not anywhere i can see .

As a matter of fact, I often go to ubuntuforums as one of my sources when looking for things. I seldom post there anymore, but i am a moderator in my LoCo team's sub-forum there, so you have your cross-pollination

Ubuntuforums is a huge, vast, enormous, large and wonderful place. But with its sheer size, i find it rather cumbersome to use, in terms of Kubuntu-specific issues, especially wading through all the 'me to' replies and, and the ugly side does rear its head at times over there, which is unfortunately a normal side effect of such a large community.

Having Kubuntu separate gives you yet another dimension of choice: to be in a smaller community.
I think Kubuntu folks will get more attention here, the way we do it. If you can't get answers here, you can search or post there. As a helper of sorts, I find it difficult to work at Ubuntu at times. Quite a large volume of assorted replies pounding in every minute. I don't mind the “competitive” aspects of it—in fact, that's how you learn & expand any capabilities you have—but it can get so hectic that threads go on for a dozen posts or more before a real solution is even started, and it can become hard to sort it all out.

          Thanks for the comments guys!

It's great to see that I appear to be in the right place! - I've received plenty of helpful advice over the past couple of days...

Hopefully I can get this install into something resembling (in terms of appearance AND functionality) my old XP box and finally switch to Kubuntu for good!

          Cheers,

          Mike.

Don't look at Ubuntu Forum -- that Gnome stuff can infect your system through the wire!

I'm kidding, of course. Actually, due to its vast user population, there are more examples of hardware problems and solutions there than on this Forum, where our smaller (but truly elite) group tends to focus a lot on KDE and the software side of the system. So when hardware issues arise, Ubuntu Forum is the first place to search.

            Welcome!
