    Administrative privalages

Basically, I just installed kubuntu on Monday and I'm pretty much lost. It seems that I can't modify anything in the /usr folder as well as most of the other ones ( I made a GIMP brush, but can't save it there). I tried changing the permissions, but obviously it didn't work. Seeing as allowing a root account requires the modification of a file in the /etc folder, and that I'm not familiar with the sudo command, or much of terminal for that matter, I can't really do much. Could anyone guide me as to how would I go about changing the permissions for those folders?
