    Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

Ok so I'm brand new to the entire Linux thing as of like 3 days ago and I do not understand how to upgrade to KDE4. I have tried to follow the instructions on http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php but its not working or I dont understand how to do it. First off

    1. How do you add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main to your /etc/apt/sources.list I tried to add it in adept manager but I dont see KDE4-core anywhere. I've also tried that add/remove programs and its not in there either.

Someone please try to lay this out for me. I'm very fustraited at this point and need basic basic basic steps on what to do.

Re: Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

Open Konsole (Terminal Program) and input the command
    kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
This will open the sources list in Kate (Advanced Text Editor). Add the line at the bottom, save and update.

Alternatively if you have Synaptic (Package Manager) Settings>Repositories>Third Party Software>Add

      A bit of reading first:
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

      http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

if you haven't installed kde4 before all you need to do is add:
      http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main]deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main[/url]
to your repos as described above and then do in a terminal (you can copy and paste):
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
      Code:
      sudo at-get install kde4-core
I would not do that in adept as adept is still a bit buggy.
Either do it in a Terminal or install synaptic :
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install synaptic
then go to kmenu->system->synaptic and search for kde4-core and install.

      Good luck and welcome

Re: Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

        Hi there,

I am also trying to install it as well, but get nowhere yet...

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install kde4-core
        Reading package lists... Done
        Building dependency tree
        Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
        that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
kde4-core: Depends: kdebase-kde4 (>= 4:4.0.0) but it is not going to be installed
        E: Broken packages
after trying it in synaptics as well and digging around, the problem seems to be the following dependencies, with the culprit being the package kdebase-data-kde4:

        kde4-core depends on kdebase-kde4

        kdebase-kde4 depends on kdebase-bin-kde4 and konqueror-kde4

        kdebase-bin-kde4 depends on kdebase-data-kde4

trying to install that package kdebase-data-kde4 yields the following message:

        Code:
        kdebase-bin-kde4:
Depends: kdebase-data-kde4 (=4:4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1) but 4:4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1~ppa1 is to be installed
        konqueror-kde4 also depends on kdebase-data-kde4

trying to install that package konqueror-kde4 yields the following message:

        Code:
        konqueror-kde4:
Depends: kdebase-data-kde4 (>=4:4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1) but 4:4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1~ppa1 is to be installed
there seems to be a discrepancy between 4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1 and 4.0.0-0ubuntu1~gutsy1~ppa1.

I don't know what it is, but it doesn't work.

        Any suggestions?

        Cheers,
        Mike

Re: Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

Are there any packages that need to be updated after you enable the KDE4 repositories?

I had previously installed KDE4 RC 2 and the kdebase-bin package was updated. This was the first requirement for installing KDE4 RC 2. The updated kdebase-bin was still 3.5.8, however updated to allow for the install of KDE4.

Check to see if there are any updates required before installing KDE4.

            finally works.

            here's the solution http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3090269.0

the trick is to disable backports in the repositories.

Re: Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

              Hello,

I also have problems when trying to upgrade from kde4-rc2 to kde4. I wanted to follow the install instructions on http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php

So the first step is to remove previous kde4 packages from rc2 with
              Code:
              sudo apt-get remove kdelibs5 kde4base-data kde4libs-data
This step seems to be very critical because, there are lots of packages which are going to be removed, which also involves the current kde3 installation. Here is the output of
              Code:
              sudo apt-get -s remove kdelibs5 kde4base-data kde4libs-data
              which simulates removing the packages.

              Code:
Paket kde4base-data ist nicht installiert, wird also auch nicht entfernt
Paket kde4libs-data ist nicht installiert, wird also auch nicht entfernt
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
               libqca2 libqimageblitz4 libcvsservice0 smbfs kdevelop-data libsearchclient0 cvs kdebase-workspace-data libstrigihtmlgui0 libxklavier11 emerald
               extragear-plasma-data libemeraldengine0 kdepimlibs-data librsvg2-common
Verwenden Sie »apt-get autoremove«, um sie zu entfernen.
              Die folgenden Pakete werden ENTFERNT:
               basket digikam dolphin-kde4 extragear-plasma k3b kappfinder-kde4 kde-kdm-themes kde4-core kde4libs-bin kdebase-bin kdebase-bin-kde4 kdebase-kde4

Does anyone have the same problem or even an solution, because I do not want to remove kde3.5.8 packages at the moment, as kde4 (even as it has been released) seems not to be usable at the moment

              Kind regards and thanks,

Re: Upgrade to KDE 4 problems

I use Adept to remove packages. I will select the packages I wish to remove. Then use the filter check boxes to see what is really going to be removed. I can then 'Undo Changes' for the packages I wish to keep. Removing packages using apt-get has bit me in the past.

Either that or after the removal just reinstall kubuntu-desktop and all the other relevant kde packages you need.
That is one bit of info the kubuntu people don't give, which I find a bit missing.
