    Noob needs help

Alright so I'm migrating from Windows XP Pro SP2 to Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I used the live CD to install from the desktop off the live CD. At one point in the installation it asks "Who are you" and it has area's for "Your name" and "User name". I put in a desired user name and pass thinking that I will enter this info when like the start up screen before you get to the desktop ala. Windows XP. But every time I try to start up Kubuntu after I installed it, It asks for the user name. So I type it in then I push enter and it then asks for the pass. When I attempt to type in the pass it hangs and my keyboard doesn't work. Then it says "Entering user information times out after 60 seconds". Then after that it won't allow my keyboard to attempt at reentering the User name and Pass. So that is where I'm at. If there is a way to bypass that feature then I'm all ears.

Also it freezes at 94% of the installation when it says its detecting the hardware. There is also a time when it says it is installing? Or Setting up security? Then it comes up with an error message saying "Could not download security updates. You should look into this later". Now thats not word for word but if you know what I'm talking about then maybe you already know what is going on. Again I'm all ears to any and all help

    thanks for your time!

P.s. Sorry every body for the short novel but yeah.

I made a little progress if you can call it that? Anyhow I used my Kubuntu 7.04 CD instead of the 7.10 CD. Now how do I upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10?

            Re: Noob needs help

Thanks Snowhog for all your help! Now I've upgraded to 7.10 "Gutsy". When I start up Gutsy it has a icon in the taskbar? That says "Restricted Drivers" and its for my wireless network adapter. It asks for administrator privileges and then It downloads something from a website. After all that my wireless network adapter only works without any password to get into the router but I've got to have a pass to protect my internet from other users. So any help in this regard would be much appreciated.

I am also trying to use applications from Kde-apps.org and kde-look.org. I'm not sure how to do that either. My understanding is that all the apps off of kde-apps.org come in a pack called "Tar Balls?". But from there on how do I install those applications?

Most (if not all) applications on kde-look.org have installation instruction links.

                        Re: Noob needs help

most applications you find on kde-apps.org can probably be installed using adept package manager (kmenu>system>adept). Adept is the standard way to install applications, not to mention far and away the easiest.

Re flash: you prob have it by now, but another way is simply to point your browser (konqueror or firefox) to any bands myspace and it will ask you if you want to install flash, just click yes.

                          Re: Noob needs help

I have a Linksys WPC54G v.3 Wireless PCI Card and it doesn't want to work with Kubuntu. Every time I start up the system there is a Icon in the task bar that says restricted drivers. Then I use the Administrator privileges and let it install something from the internet but yet it still doesn't work. So I need someone to help me out. Ive tried to try and understand the many guides on how to do this but I'm all confused.

A little update! It turns out that when I enabled the restricted driver it now works. But I can't use any WEP keys with it for some reason so my network is unprotected. I'm not sure what the difference is here but I need to be able to use it with a WEP key.

I had the same problem when i switch to Kubuntu yesterday.

Apparently it doesn't support WPA keys, but a WEP key should work for your wireless

Find your wireless card in Network manager and input the WEP key there also specify WEP for your wireless router
