What type of machine do you have? If you know, tell us what kind of network adapter is in your computer. If not, go to K>System>Konsole and run the following command:

    lspci | grep -i net

    and paste the results here.

Why does it show me this: bash: syntax error near unexpected token '|' ?

That upright is a pipe symbol. Probably in the key row of your keyboard next to the enter button. Or, if you can, just cut and paste my text.

Or on a UK keyboard next to the left-hand shift key.

              Wrong.

              lspci | grep -i net

              That's a lower-case L (lspci)
              That's a lower case I as in India (-i)

              If in doubt, just copy/paste.
