formatting and mounting a new hard drive

i just got a new 500GB sata drive and i want to format it and move some of my files over to it before i wipe this drive clean and install 7.10 on it. I am not to familiar with unix commands so i don't know what to use. I tried GParted but it failed. I can use the terminal, just don't know what to type.

InstallingANewHardDrive Don't worry that it deals with Ubuntu - The steps about formatting the drive with GParted still apply.
