How would I go about setting up my microphone in Gutsy Gibbon? It connects to the mic jack on the soundcard, but doesn't pick up anything. In Windows it works fine. Any ideas?

First thing to check, is whether the mic is muted or not.
K Menu | Multimedia | KMix
Check the Ext Mic and Int Mic Input settings. The green buttons under the microphone: dark green (muted) light green (on). Check the slider settings also.Windows no longer obstruct my view.

It wasn't muted, and I tried putting the slider from mid to full, yet no dice.

Is 'Capture' (kmix -> input tab) enabled and the slider not set to 0?Comment

Yeah, it was enabled and turned up. But I feel reasonably stupid now, because the actual jack for the microphone on the soundcard was half way to being broken off
