i installed Ndiswrapper from adept and when i open it, well it doesnt open.

it starts to open, then after 10 seconds it disapears and i get no errors or anything.

Ok, so you have ndiswrapper installed .

 Driver: Any marvell chipset driver, either from the CD, from Netgear website or from Marvell website
 Other: You cannot have preemtive kernel. It hangs either on modprobe, or randomly later. Tried with 2.6.8, 2.6.12, 2.6.13.4 and ndiswrapper1.1 and 1.4.

First try using the WG511v2.INF driver on the Netgear cd (just pop it in your drive, and have a dig round for it).
Copy that driver onto your hard drive - say in your home folder (perhaps create a directory named netgear_wireless)
Then open a terminal, and type the following (be careful of sudo - make sure the commands are exactly as I type them - if the text 'case' of the driver is different, adjust accordingly when you type)

cd ~/netgear_wireless
sudo ndiswrapper -i WG511v2.INF
ndiswrapper -l

Now you should see a message indicating the driver is present, if it is not post the info back here, if it is do the following:

sudo ndiswrapper -m
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

Now check that ndiswrapper has been succcessful type:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper

in the terminal, you should see an ouput - something like 'alias wlan0 ndiswrapper' . Again if you don't let me know.
Now type

dmesg

in the terminal, you should see an entry for your wireless card, if all has been successful.

Now if you can see an entry in the dmesg output for your card, reboot, then check the status of ndiswrapper by typing in a terminal

ndiswrapper -l
you should see something like:
WG511v2 driver installed, hardware present

The you just have to setup the network connection - if you need a hand with that, post away, get stuck - just post

it wasnt working at all on kubuntu :S and most of the applications were crashing..
I had a liv ubuntu cd that someone from work gave me once so i gave that a go and everything seems to be working
ndiswrapper is working and i did what you told me and the light is flashing now (Yayy :P)

butttt lol (yess.. another but..) though the computer detects it and stuff and the light is flashing.. it's like it's not properly connecting to the nextwork :S when the card is working fine, usually it has a steady light, not a flashing one. Ahhh im so closeee lol

Also when i type in terminal cat /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper it says the directory doesnt exist :S

ok.. change of details :P
i installed kubuntu again and did everything from scratch. It all worked fine, got everything u said id get. It says Driver installed and then i put my card in and the lights came on and it says device present. But then i rebooted the comp and the lights turned off and didnt come back on :S

Also i dont know how to set up a wireless network on kubuntu any help would be apreciated

Also, iv realised that when i type in the terminal
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
the lights on the card start flashing again, once the lights start flashing i can detect wireless networks using Kwifimanager but i cant connect to them

UPDATE Iv done more research and iv realised how much of a noob i am :P especially that ditsy recognition of sudo modprobe ndiswrapper and the network card's lights turning on :P

i scanned for wireless and found the one i want to connect to

Ok now you need to setup the network interface.

I'll give some examples, as it looks like your card is now working.

First backup your 'interfaces' file:

sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces_backup

This file is used to store your network configuration, now edit the current one adding the following to the bottom:

sudo kate /etc/network/interfaces

The text editor kate will open as superuser - now either type, or copy/paste the following in (assuming you are using WEP encryption for wireless)

#wireless interface
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid Michael
wireless-key {your wireless key}

Replace {your wireless key} with the one for your network - and save it. now restart the network daemon (called a service in windows)

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

If you are having problems with connecting, try stopping the encryption on the router, and just putting a # in front of the 'wireless-key' section - a # will comment out that part so that is not 'seen' by the network daemon when it is restarted eg:

#wireless-key {your wireless key}

Once that is done type the following:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

This will restart the network daemon, and should pickup the new configuration.
Let me know what sort of encryption you are using if you are still having problems

But the steps above should set this up automatically - if there is already a wlan0 section in the interfaces file - just amend it with the appropriate details

One other thing - you may need to create a /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper file to automatically bring up the card after reboot (if this is not happening). Do this by :

Add the following to it using kate:

then save it and close kate.

Are either of you using knetworkmanager? I connect to my wireless connection with knetworkmanager. Right click the icon in the system tray and select which network to connect to... kwallet asks for my password... I'm connected. Just curious?

and i did install knetwork manager but it only lets me scan for networks, doesnt let me connect. The connect button is actually blurred out :S

knetwork manager is the GUI for manipulating the network interface config and for bringing up the network - in my experience it is very 'buggy'.

Ok post the contents of the following so I can take a look, use the following commands in the terminal and copy/paste each output:

Also have you tried connecting with no encryption ? What sort of encryption are you using ? (WEP, WPA etc? )

Forgot to add, edit out your wireless key from the /etc/network/interfaces file before you post it

Again please let me know what type of encyption you are using - and are you using a passphrase or key (shared/open) for the encryption - I don't need to know the key itself - just what setup you are using - without this info, I won't be able to get you connected to your router.
